William Duncan letters, 1860.

The William E. Duncan letters include correspondence between members of the Duncan family exchanged between August through November 1860. Several of the letters were written by Duncan's niece, Mary D. Smith of Beaufort, South Carolina, and refer to the management of the Blue Mud plantation and the division of land resulting from a contested will. The collection includes a series of letters from Duncan's nephew, David G. Duncan, in New Orleans, Louisiana, asking his uncle for advice and aid. David apparently had suffered some "disgrace," was facing charges, and was seeking employment. M.W. Welman wrote to William Duncan thanking him for his interest in the Savannah Female Asylum and discusses the work of the school. A reprint from the Savannah Republican, October 11, 1860 discussing the disputes between William Henry Stiles and J.R. Sneed, is included in the collection.
